Foreword by Beryl Wilson and Peter Braune

On behalf of Granville Island, we would like to invite you to visit our unique Island community and help us celebrate the success of this acclaimed artistic, cultural and business center. Three Granville Island community projects have recently come about as a response to a desire to show who we are as a community. These projects couldn’t have come at a better time, particularly with the international visitors that we are welcoming into our city this February. There has been a dvd produced for the Artisans Association, a Granville Island book featuring the unique stories of some of the merchants and the people who had the vision for Granville Island, and this newspaper, Granville Island Works.

In 2009, the Granville Island Business and Community Association (GIBCA) wanted to create a legacy piece that would go on after the Olympics, be unique, and promote Granville Island businesses. The Olympic committee was formed and wanted their promotional vehicle to be different, not like the brochures you see everywhere else, something to show Granville Island as a community. The Olympic committee put out a call for a name for the project. “Change”, a branding agency on the Island suggested “Granville Island Works”. The Olympic committee decided that would be the name, but they had no vehicle.

Peter Braune of New Leaf Editions ran into Beryl Wilson, former editor of The Creek newspaper. After talking to Beryl, the committee decided a newspaper would be the vehicle, but they didn’t know how to do it. Serendipitously, Cloe showed up. Cloe turned to Jocelyn, owner of ZenHouse Media, the local graphic and web design business where Cloe was interning as a graphic design student. Jocelyn’s community-based small business embraced the project and working in conjunction with the GIBCA, the project gained momentum.

Due to the successful fundraising drive by ZenHouse Media as well as the sponsorship and support of the GIBCA and many other businesses, the stories of 101 Granville Islanders are featured and 90,000 copies of the newspaper have been printed. The funky letterpress style of this paper hearkens back to the Island’s industrial days and the exciting new Granville Island map makes it easy and fun to discover the many hidden treasures of the Island. The 2010 Special Edition of Granville Island Works promotes the recently launched website at www.granvilleislandworks.com.
